Riobamba Map Poster & Print
Riobamba lies at about 2,750 metres in the central Ecuadorian Andes and is the capital of Chimborazo Province. The original town stood some distance away and was destroyed by the earthquake of 1797. The city was then rebuilt on the present plain, which is why its centre is such a tidy chessboard of square blocks and orderly plazas.
On the map the grid runs cleanly in every direction before loosening into newer districts and farmland at the edges. Parks appear as single missing squares in the pattern, and the longer avenues show as slightly heavier lines across the right-angled streets. In black and white the effect is almost architectural, like a plan drawn with a ruler.
Riobamba also has a place in national history: Ecuador's first constituent assembly met here in 1830. A Riobamba map poster shows that planned centre at a scale where each block is legible. It is framed by the open land that leads towards Chimborazo, the highest summit in Ecuador and the point on Earth's surface farthest from its centre.

Plazas and parks
Open squares break up the grid at regular intervals. On the poster they appear as clean blank cells within the dense pattern of the surrounding streets.
Towards Chimborazo
The volcano rises north-west of the city. Its summit lies outside a typical frame, but the land climbing towards it shapes how the streets thin out on that side.
