Risod lies in Washim district in the Vidarbha region of eastern Maharashtra. The surrounding land is part of the Deccan plateau: broad, gently rolling and mostly farmed. From above, the town shows a dense old core with lanes packed tightly together, and a looser ring of newer houses and roads around it.
Main roads leave the town toward neighbouring market centres. They form a star pattern that gives the plan its structure. Between them, a mesh of smaller streets fills the gaps. Beyond the edge of town, field boundaries and cart tracks take over, and small streams and water tanks break up the open ground.
