Riva del Garda occupies the northernmost shore of Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. Here the water narrows into a fjord-like arm between steep mountains. The old town lies right at the water's edge, a dense grid of lanes behind the harbour. Newer districts spread across the small plain inland, and the slopes of the surrounding mountains close off the view.
Two landmarks anchor the historic centre. The Rocca, a moated castle, sits almost in the lake, and the square Apponale tower rises above the harbour square. Just east of town, Monte Brione rises as a long, isolated ridge. The reliable winds that blow across the northern end of the lake have made Riva a centre for sailing and windsurfing.

Castle in the water
The Rocca stands on the lakefront, surrounded by its own moat. Its compact, square footprint is one of the most recognisable shapes in the historic centre.
Monte Brione
