Riverbank sits in Stanislaus County in California's Central Valley, between Modesto and Oakdale. The town grew up around the Santa Fe railway, and its map still reflects that origin: a straight rail line crosses the area, with a grid of streets on either side. Newer subdivisions spread outward in curving loops and cul-de-sacs typical of Californian suburbs.
To the north the Stanislaus River winds through a band of trees, marking the edge of town with a soft, meandering line.
