Roshal’ lies in the far east of Moscow Oblast, in the Meshchera lowland, a region of forests, marshes and peat workings. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets set within a wide expanse of woodland, with water bodies and bog margins breaking up the surrounding land.
The town grew in the twentieth century around a chemical plant and was named after Semyon Roshal, a revolutionary figure. Its layout reflects that origin, with an industrial zone on one side and planned residential blocks, typical of Soviet factory settlements, on the other.
