Rouiba is east of central Algiers, on the flat, fertile Mitidja plain, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean. On a map, the older town centre is a compact grid of streets from the colonial period. Newer housing estates spread out around it, and the ground between the town and nearby settlements is increasingly built up.
Rouiba is best known in Algeria for its industrial zone, which it shares with neighbouring Reghaïa. For decades the area has been home to vehicle manufacturing and other heavy industry, and from above it shows up as large rectangular plots with long access roads. A railway line and main roads link the town to Algiers in the west and to the coastal towns further east.
