Saarbrücken follows the Saar river as it bends through a valley close to the French border. From above, the city is a long band of streets on both banks, with a riverside motorway along the water and several bridges linking the old castle quarter on the left bank to the St. Johann district on the right.
On the left bank, the streets around Saarbrücken Castle and the Ludwigskirche form a compact baroque layout of squares and straight axes. Across the river, St. Johann has a denser, looser web of lanes around its old market square. Beyond the centre, the grid thins into residential slopes, former mining settlements and large patches of forest. The Ludwigskirche and the castle quarter sit in an ordered pattern of squares and straight streets laid out in the eighteenth century, easy to spot among the curving roads around them.
Forested edges
