Sahagún lies in the department of Córdoba in northern Colombia, on the flat and gently rolling savannas that stretch between the Sinú and San Jorge river valleys. The town is a regional centre for the surrounding countryside, and on a map it sits as a well-defined block of streets in a wide landscape of pastures.
The centre follows the regular grid inherited from Spanish colonial planning, organised around a main square and church, with streets extending outward in straight lines. Newer neighbourhoods on the fringes are less regular, and the national highway that links the interior of Colombia with the Caribbean coast runs past the town, giving it a strong outer axis.
Livestock farming has long shaped the area, and the fields around Sahagún are divided into large paddocks, with seasonal streams, ponds and low-lying wet ground between them.
