Sāhibganj stands on the southern bank of the Ganges in the northeastern corner of Jharkhand, where the river is broad and braided with sandbars and channels. On a map the town forms a long strip between the water and the Rajmahal Hills to the south, with streets running parallel to the riverbank and a railway line following its length.
It is the headquarters of Sahibganj district and one of the few places in Jharkhand directly on the Ganges. The river has long made it a crossing and trading point, and in recent years a multimodal terminal has been built here on the national waterway. The Rajmahal Hills behind the town are known for their plant fossils and ancient volcanic rocks.
