Salerno stretches along the curve of the Gulf of Salerno, at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast. On the map, it looks like a narrow band between the sea and the steep hills. The medieval centre is a knot of lanes at the western end. A long waterfront promenade runs straight along the shore, and newer districts extend eastwards over flatter ground.
Salerno's medical school, the Schola Medica Salernitana, was one of the earliest in medieval Europe. The cathedral holds the relics of Saint Matthew. In September 1943, Allied forces landed on the beaches of the gulf. Above the city, the Arechi Castle watches over the coast from a ridge, reached by winding roads that stand out on the map.

At the western end, the old town is a close network of narrow lanes and small squares around the cathedral, in contrast with the modern streets to the east.

Switchback roads climb the slopes towards the Arechi Castle. Their loops show how steeply the land rises behind the coast.
