Salvatierra lies in the south of Guanajuato state, on the banks of the Lerma River. Founded in 1644, it is regarded as the first settlement in Guanajuato to receive the title of city. On the map, the historic centre follows a clear colonial grid of straight streets and square blocks, organised around its main plaza and churches.
The Lerma runs along the edge of the town, and an old stone bridge, the Puente de Batanes, carries a road across it. Beyond the river and around the town spreads the fertile farmland of the Bajío. Today Salvatierra is part of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos programme, which recognises towns with well-preserved historic centres.

Lerma River
The river curves along the edge of the town. Its bends contrast with the straight streets and mark the boundary between the town and the farmland beyond.
Puente de Batanes
The old stone bridge crosses the Lerma close to the centre. On the map it is a small but meaningful line joining the town to the far bank.
