Sannois lies in the Val-d'Oise just northwest of Paris, between Argenteuil and Ermont. Its street plan is shaped by the Butte de Sannois, one of the isolated hills of the Parisis area, which rises above the town to the north. Roads climb its sides in curves and switchbacks, while the flatter ground below is filled with a close pattern of houses, small blocks and residential lanes.
A restored windmill stands at the top of the hill. It recalls the vineyards and mills that covered these slopes before the suburbs grew. From the summit there are long views south over the Paris basin. On the map the hilltop appears as an open area of paths and green space, clearly separate from the tight streets around it.
