Santrampur is a town in the Mahisagar district of eastern Gujarat, close to the borders with Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The landscape here is more varied than on Gujarat's plains, with low hills, seasonal streams and patches of scrub and forest around the farmland. The town itself is compact and gathers around its older centre.
It was once the capital of the princely state of Sant, a small Rajput state that joined the Indian Union after 1947. The old core still reflects that role, with a denser pattern of streets around the former seat of the rulers. Outside it, the town opens up into newer housing and roads running out toward the surrounding villages.
