Sapanca stretches along the southern shore of the lake that shares its name, in Sakarya province in northwest Turkey. On a map the town forms a long, narrow strip. The lake fills one side of the frame as a broad, calm shape, while the other side climbs into the forested foothills of the Samanlı Mountains, cut by streams running down toward the water.
Lake Sapanca is a freshwater lake and an important water source for the surrounding cities, and its shores have long drawn weekend visitors from Istanbul. The main highway and the railway between Istanbul and Ankara both follow the corridor along the lake, so strong parallel lines run beside the shoreline, with the town's streets threaded between them and the slopes.
