Sarakhs lies in the far northeast of Iran, in Razavi Khorasan province, right on the border with Turkmenistan. From above, the town sits on a flat, dry plain beside the Tejen, known in Iran as the Hari Rud, which marks the frontier. Directly across the river is the Turkmen town of Serakhs, so the map shows two settlements facing each other.
This position has shaped its history. Sarakhs was a stop on routes between Iran and Central Asia, part of the wider Silk Road network, and it remains a crossing point today. A railway link opened in the 1990s connects Iran's network with Turkmenistan through the town, and a free trade zone has grown up around it.
