Sasovo lies in the east of Ryazan Oblast, on the Tsna, a river that winds northward through forest and meadow toward the Moksha. The town grew around a station on the railway, and on a map that origin is clear: straight, rectangular blocks laid out near the tracks, with the river's looping course running alongside.
The town is also known for its civil aviation flight school, which has trained generations of Soviet and Russian pilots, and the airfield forms a distinct geometric shape at the edge of the plan. Elsewhere, low-rise private houses on long plots contrast with the denser apartment blocks built near the centre in the Soviet decades.
