Sedan lies in the Ardennes department of northeastern France, on the Meuse River, which curves through the town and its surroundings in wide loops. The map shows a compact old centre on the river, with the massive outline of the castle rising above it, and newer districts spreading across both banks and the surrounding slopes.
The Château de Sedan is often described as one of the largest fortified castles in Europe, and its angular bastions are clearly visible from above. The town is also known for the Battle of Sedan in 1870, where Napoleon III was captured during the Franco-Prussian War, a turning point in French history.
