Selangau lies in central Sarawak, on the island of Borneo, between the larger towns of Sibu and Bintulu. It is a small administrative centre in a landscape of lowland forest, plantations and rivers, and on a map the town occupies only a modest patch of this wide green territory.
The Pan Borneo Highway passes through the area, forming the dominant line of the map and connecting Selangau to the coast and the towns along it. The town's own streets are few and closely grouped, while longer rural roads branch away toward longhouses, farms and plantation land.
