Selebi-Phikwe lies in eastern Botswana, in dry, open bushveld. It was built in the late 1960s and early 1970s to serve a copper and nickel mine, and its planned origin is obvious on the map. Wide roads, curving residential crescents and a clear separation between housing, commerce and the mining area give the town a modern, deliberate layout.
The name joins Selebi and Phikwe, the two ore deposits the mine was built to work. For decades the BCL mine was the town's economic heart, until it closed in 2016. Since then Selebi-Phikwe has been working to diversify, and the large industrial areas on the edge of town remain a defining part of its landscape.

Mine and works
Large industrial areas mark the former mine and processing works. They form bold geometric shapes on the edge of town that dominate one side of the poster.
Open bushveld
Flat, dry savanna surrounds the town, so the built-up area and its roads stand out sharply against a quiet background of tracks and scattered settlements.
