Senftenberg lies in Lower Lusatia in southern Brandenburg, on the Black Elster river. On a map the old town appears as a compact knot of streets around a market square, with the bastioned outline of its fortress just beside it. Beyond the centre, residential districts and former industrial areas spread outward, and to the south a large lake fills much of the frame.
That lake tells the story of the region. For decades Lusatia was shaped by open-cast lignite mining, and when a pit near Senftenberg closed it was flooded to create Lake Senftenberg, now a popular recreation area. It was one of the first of the many artificial lakes that together form the Lusatian Lakeland, a landscape still being reshaped today.
