Shāhganj is a town in the Jaunpur district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, set on the broad, level plain of the Ganges basin. Its identity on the map comes from the railway: Shāhganj is a junction, and several lines converge here before heading off in different directions. The town fills the space around them with a dense, irregular web of lanes and market streets.
Around the built-up core the landscape is flat and intensively farmed, a quilt of small fields broken by village clusters, ponds and field tracks. Main roads leave town much as the railways do, radiating toward neighbouring towns across the plain. There are no hills or coastlines here, so the lines of transport do the work that rivers and ridges do elsewhere.
