Shāmgarh is a town in Mandsaur district in the north-west of Madhya Pradesh, on the Malwa plateau. The land here is broad and gently undulating, cut by seasonal streams and dotted with ponds. The town forms a compact cluster at the centre of a web of farm roads and field boundaries.
Shāmgarh has a station on the busy railway line between Delhi and Mumbai, and the tracks cross the map in a long, straight line. The older streets lie on one side, with the market lanes packed close together. Newer housing and roads extend outwards, and the surrounding fields are a mix of long, narrow strips and irregular plots.
