Shaoyang lies in central-western Hunan, on the Zi River. The river curves through the city, and a smaller tributary joins it near the centre, so the map is shaped by water meeting at angles. The older districts gather close to the banks, while newer areas spread across the low hills and valleys that surround them.
The city is an administrative centre for a large, mostly rural region of the same name, and it has a long history as a market town on the river. Beyond these basics, Shaoyang is less widely known outside China, and its map is perhaps the best introduction to how the place is put together.
