Shekhupura lies on the flat plain of Punjab, a short distance northwest of Lahore, and the map shows a city growing outward along its main roads. The older centre is compact, with narrow streets around the old fort area. Around it, newer neighbourhoods and industrial areas spread along the highways, and beyond them the land opens into fields crossed by canals.
The city's name goes back to the Mughal emperor Jahangir, whose childhood name was Sheikhu. Just outside the city stands the Hiran Minar, a tower and water tank complex built in the early seventeenth century in memory of the emperor's favourite antelope. The Shekhupura Fort, from the same era, sits near the older centre.
