Shivamogga lies on the Tunga river in central Karnataka, where the dry Deccan plain begins to give way to the wetter, forested hills of the Malnad region. From above, the town forms a compact mass of streets beside the river. Bridges connect it to the far bank, and roads fan out toward the Western Ghats.
The older commercial quarters are tightly packed with narrow lanes and busy market streets, while newer layouts extend outward in more open, regular blocks. Around the edges, paddy fields, areca nut plantations and scattered villages appear as a looser network of lanes. The areca trade has long been one of the mainstays of the local economy.
