Shujaabad lies in the south of Punjab, a short distance from Multan, on flat and fertile land near the Chenab. On a map the town appears as a compact centre ringed by agricultural land, with canals and field boundaries stretching across the plain in long straight lines. Roads link it to Multan and to neighbouring towns, and the terrain offers no hills to interrupt the pattern.
The town was founded in the eighteenth century by Nawab Shuja Khan, from whom it takes its name, and its older centre was once enclosed by walls. Today the historic core is marked by closely packed streets, while newer neighbourhoods spread more loosely around it. From above, the difference between the dense middle and the open orchards outside is immediate.
Shujaabad is widely known for its mangoes, and orchards cover much of the land around the town, giving the surroundings a regular, gridded texture. The Chenab flows not far to the west.
