Shumerlya lies in the south of the Chuvash Republic, in a heavily forested area not far from the Sura River. The town grew in the twentieth century around a railway and the timber industry, and its map reflects that practical beginning. Streets are laid out in fairly regular blocks, with the railway running through as a clear, straight line and industrial areas next to it.
Forest surrounds the town on most sides, so on a map the built-up area appears as a distinct island of streets in a large, quiet green expanse. Roads leave in several directions through the woods, linking Shumerlya with neighbouring towns and villages. Wide clearings, rail sidings and timber yards add larger, simpler shapes to the street network.
