Shymkent lies in the far south of Kazakhstan, on a plain at the foot of the western Tian Shan mountains, not far from the Uzbek border. It is the country's third-largest city, and from above it appears as a broad, spread-out grid of long avenues and residential districts, with the Badam River and smaller streams running through it.
The area has been settled for a long time, and Shymkent grew up along the old caravan routes of the Silk Road. The nearby town of Sayram is one of the oldest settlements in the region. In the Soviet era, Shymkent became an industrial centre, and today it is a major city of the Kazakh south.
A Shymkent map poster shows how the city stretches in all directions from its centre. Large parks and green corridors along the rivers appear as open spaces in the grid, while main roads run towards Tashkent, Turkistan and Taraz. To the south and east the land begins to rise towards the mountains.
