Sidi Bel Abbes has one of the most legible plans in western Algeria. The town was founded in the mid-nineteenth century as a military post beside the Mekerra river. It was built as a rectangular grid enclosed by walls with gates on its main axes. The walls have mostly gone, but the orderly centre is still easy to read from above.
For more than a century the city was the home base of the French Foreign Legion, which left in 1962. Today it is a university and regional centre. Newer districts have grown well beyond the old boundary and spread across the surrounding farmland. The city is also known as one of the birthplaces of raï music.
