Siegburg lies east of Bonn in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Sieg River near its confluence with the Agger, a short distance before the Sieg joins the Rhine. The town grew around the Michaelsberg, a steep hill topped by a Benedictine abbey founded in the eleventh century. On a map the hill forms a clear green island at the centre, with the old town streets wrapped around its base.
In the Middle Ages Siegburg was known for its stoneware pottery, which was traded widely across Europe. Today it is a regional centre with a station on the high-speed line between Cologne and Frankfurt. Railway lines, the motorway and the river valleys divide the town into distinct parts, each with its own street pattern.
