Nearby, the Tinkisso River joins the Niger, and from above the two broad waterways, with their sandbanks and seasonal floodplains, shape the whole region. The Siguiri area has been known for gold for centuries, and it remains one of the most important mining zones in Guinea, with both large industrial operations and extensive artisanal digging.
