Şimleu Silvaniei lies in Sălaj County in northwestern Romania, in the valley of the Crasna river. The map is shaped by contrast: a flat valley floor where the streets and houses gather, and immediately beside it the Măgura Şimleului, a long hill whose slopes carry vineyards and woods. The town grew along the foot of this hill, and its plan follows the valley rather than a grid.
The ruins of the Báthory fortress stand in the town, a reminder that the Báthory family, which produced princes of Transylvania and a king of Poland, had strong roots here. The town also has a restored synagogue that now houses a memorial museum to the Jewish communities of northern Transylvania deported in 1944.
