Skardu lies in a broad, high valley in Baltistan, where the Indus River opens into a wide, braided plain before narrowing again between steep mountains. From above, the town spreads along the southern edge of this flat valley floor. The river's shifting channels and pale sandbanks lie to the north, and bare slopes rise sharply behind it.
The streets form a loose network around a main bazaar road, with orchards, fields and irrigation channels threaded between the houses. The airport sits on the open plain to the west. A rocky ridge by the river carries the old Kharpocho fort, which overlooks the town. Unusually for such high ground, the valley holds stretches of sand dunes, sometimes called a cold desert.
Skardu is the gateway for expeditions to K2 and the Baltoro Glacier, and nearby lakes such as Satpara and Kachura draw visitors in summer. A Skardu map poster shows a town that feels small against its setting: a scatter of streets between a great river and ranges that fill the frame.

Kharpocho fort ridge
A steep rocky ridge beside the river carries the old fort. It interrupts the street plan and marks the town's historic high point.
Satpara Lake
A mountain lake set in a valley south of town. It is the main water source for the area and a clear shape among the surrounding slopes.
