Somotillo lies in the Chinandega Department, in the far northwest of Nicaragua near the border with Honduras. The town follows the Spanish colonial pattern familiar across Central America: a grid of straight streets and square blocks arranged around a central plaza, with the church and main civic buildings nearby.
The municipality includes the Guasaule crossing, one of the main land routes between Nicaragua and Honduras, and the highway toward it gives the area regional importance. Beyond the edge of the grid, the map opens into farmland and dry plains, with roads and tracks leading to scattered rural communities.
