Sompeta lies in Srikakulam district, near the north-eastern tip of Andhra Pradesh, a few kilometres from the Bay of Bengal. The town sits on the coastal plain that runs north towards Odisha. The highway and railway follow the coast here, and palm groves, rice fields and ponds fill the land between settlements.
From above, Sompeta has an organic plan: a central area of close-set streets, with roads leading out to the surrounding villages and the coast. To the east, the land turns to wetlands and sandy ground before the shoreline. These wetlands became widely known in 2010, when local residents campaigned against a power plant proposed on the site.

Wetlands to the east
Low-lying marshes and ponds stretch towards the coast. They add soft, irregular shapes to the composition and recall the local campaign to protect them.
Highway and railway
The main coastal road and railway run past Sompeta between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. They cut clean, parallel strokes through the surrounding farmland.
