South Riding is a planned community in Loudoun County, Virginia, developed from the 1990s on former farmland south of Route 50, not far from Washington Dulles International Airport. From above, it looks exactly like what it is: a carefully designed suburb of curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs, parks and small lakes, organised around a few main collector roads.
The layout was conceived as a whole, with neighbourhoods, schools, sports fields, trails and a town centre planned from the start. On a map this produces an unusually coherent pattern, with streets forming rounded loops that branch off main parkways and repeat across the community, each pocket slightly different in shape.
