Sovetskaya Gavan’ sits on the coast of Khabarovsk Krai, where the Tatar Strait separates the Russian mainland from Sakhalin. From above, the defining shape is the harbour itself: a large natural bay that splits into several long inlets pushing inland. The town has no single centre. The bay was known in the nineteenth century as Imperatorskaya Gavan, the Imperial Harbour, and was renamed in the Soviet period. Open Tatar Strait
