Sparta is a township in Sussex County, in the hilly north-west of New Jersey. From above, it looks nothing like a gridded town: roads curve through wooded ridges, residential streets loop around lakes, and small commercial areas sit along the main routes. Water is everywhere on the map, from one large lake to many small ponds.
The best-known feature is Lake Mohawk, a private lake community developed from the late 1920s, with homes set along its irregular shoreline and a boardwalk area at its northern end. Other lakes and ponds are scattered across the township, and much of the surrounding land remains forested or hilly.
