Springfield lies in Fairfax County, Virginia, south of Washington in the suburbs of Northern Virginia. From above it is a place defined by movement. Interstate 95, Interstate 395 and the Capital Beltway meet here at the Springfield Interchange, known locally as the Mixing Bowl, a knot of ramps and flyovers that dominates the map.
Around that knot, the residential pattern is classic postwar Northern Virginia. Neighbourhoods of looping streets and cul-de-sacs spread across gently wooded ground, broken by stream valleys and parkland that follow the creeks.
