Sredneuralsk lies north of Yekaterinburg in Sverdlovsk Oblast, on the southern shore of Lake Iset. The town was founded in the 1930s alongside the Sredneuralsk power station, and the map shows that origin clearly: a planned grid of residential blocks, broad avenues and courtyards set between the lake and the industrial site.
The lake dominates the frame, a large irregular expanse of water with a shoreline of bays and wooded points, and the source of the Iset river, which flows south through Yekaterinburg. Pine and birch forest surrounds the town and much of the lake. The power plant's cooling channels and industrial buildings form a distinct zone at the water's edge.
