Srivaikuntam lies on the banks of the Tamirabarani river in the Thoothukudi district of southern Tamil Nadu. It is known as a temple town. At its heart stands the Vaikuntanathar temple, dedicated to Vishnu, which is one of the Nava Tirupati shrines along this stretch of the river. The Tamirabarani is the lifeline of the region. At Srivaikuntam an old anicut, or weir, diverts water into irrigation channels.
