Stockholm is built on fourteen islands at the point where Lake Mälaren drains into Saltsjön, an inlet of the Baltic Sea. On the map the city appears as a cluster of land fragments linked by dozens of bridges, with open water weaving between them. Gamla stan, the old town, sits on a small central island, its medieval lanes a dense tangle among straighter modern streets.
North of the old town, Norrmalm and Östermalm follow broad, regular grids laid out in the nineteenth century. To the south, Södermalm rises on high cliffs above the water, while Djurgården to the east is largely parkland. The city hosts the Nobel Prize ceremony every December, and beyond it an archipelago of tens of thousands of islands stretches toward the open sea.
