Stowbtsy stands on the Neman in the Minsk region, where the river is still young and winding through low, forested country. From above, the town spreads along the water. A fairly regular pattern of streets is broken up by green space and scattered private houses, and the river curves past on one side, giving the map a soft, natural edge.
The town is closely tied to Yakub Kolas, one of the founders of modern Belarusian literature. He was born nearby, and the area appears throughout his writing. Stowbtsy also sits on the main railway between Minsk and Brest, and that straight line of track is one of the strongest features on any map of the town.

The main east–west railway runs through the town in a long straight line, with sidings and the station area widening the band of track where it passes.
