Subaykhān sits in the Euphrates valley in Deir ez-Zor province, where the whole pattern of settlement follows the river. From above, the town is a strip of houses and lanes lying along a road that runs parallel to the water, between cultivated plots near the bank and bare ground rising toward the steppe.
The Euphrates itself is the defining shape. It winds through the valley in wide loops, with channels, sandbars and small islands that change the texture of the map. On the far side the same pattern repeats: a thin cultivated margin, then emptiness. Few landscapes show this clearly how a river decides where people can live.
