Sudak lies on the southeastern coast of Crimea, where the mountains come right down to the Black Sea. The town occupies a valley that opens onto a wide, curved bay. On a map the coastline gives the composition a clear, elegant shape, with streets running inland from the beach toward the hills and vineyards behind.
At the western end of the bay rises a steep rocky hill topped by a fortress built by the Genoese in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when the town was known as Soldaia. Its walls and towers still follow the ridge, and on the map they draw a strong outline against the sea.
West of the town, the coast becomes more rugged, with cliffs, coves and wooded headlands leading toward Novyi Svet, a village known for its sparkling-wine tradition.
