Szombathely lies in western Hungary, close to the Austrian border. On a map, the city has a compact historic centre of irregular streets and squares, surrounded by a ring of later districts. Main roads radiate from the centre toward the surrounding towns, and the small Perint stream runs through the city.
It is considered Hungary's oldest city. It was founded by the Romans in the first century as Savaria, a colony on the Amber Road, and later became the capital of the province of Pannonia Superior. Remains of the Roman town, including a temple to Isis, can still be seen. Saint Martin of Tours was born here in the fourth century.
