Tabas lies on the edge of the great deserts of central Iran, and the map shows exactly why it exists: a patch of dense streets, gardens and palm groves in the middle of vast open land. Water from springs and qanats made the oasis possible, and the cultivated area around the town stands out clearly against the empty country beyond.
The town was almost entirely destroyed by a major earthquake in 1978 and was rebuilt afterwards, so much of today's street plan is relatively modern. Among its best-known sites is the Golshan Garden, a historic Persian garden with flowing water and tall palms. Tabas was transferred to Yazd Province in 2013.

The historic Persian garden of Golshan, with its palms and water channels, is one of the town's best-known places and sits within the urban fabric.

After the 1978 earthquake much of the town was rebuilt, and the street pattern shows a mix of broad planned roads and the older oasis layout.
