Tabay lies in the state of Mérida in the Venezuelan Andes, northeast of the city of Mérida, in the upper valley of the Chama River. From above, the town stretches along the valley. The main road and the river run side by side, streets branch off wherever the ground allows, and steep slopes rise on both sides.
The geography is dramatic for a town of this size. Mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida rise to the southeast, and the valley narrows as it climbs toward the high páramo.
