Taichung lies in a basin in central Taiwan, with the Dadu Plateau to the west and the foothills of the Central Mountain Range to the east. From above, the city spreads out in a broad fan. Its older core has a grid that is set at an angle to the compass, while newer districts follow different orientations.
Taiwan Boulevard runs as a long, straight axis from the old centre northwest toward the coast and the port. Small rivers and canals, including the Luchuan and Liuchuan, run through the city in narrow lines. Taichung Park, with its pond and pavilion, anchors the old centre near the railway station.
In the newer districts to the west, the National Taichung Theater, designed by Toyo Ito, and the long Calligraphy Greenway add distinctive shapes to the map. Calligraphy Greenway
