Tanuku lies in the western Godavari delta in Andhra Pradesh, one of the most intensively irrigated landscapes in India. From above, the town is surrounded by a patchwork of paddy fields cut by straight canals. The built-up area follows these waterways and the main roads rather than spreading out from a single central square.
The national highway between Vijayawada and Rajahmundry runs through the town, and a railway line crosses the delta nearby. Together they give the map two strong axes. A denser core of lanes, markets and temples has grown up around them, with residential streets filling the spaces in between.
Tanuku is also an industrial centre for the delta. Sugar production is among its long-established businesses, supplied by the cane and rice country around it. The highway axis
